A certified chaperone is a trained observer who can be a witness to medicolegal assessments, intimate medical examinations, and non-intimate medical examinations. Utilizing a certified chaperone is recommended for safeguarding professional boundaries for both the patient/assessee and the healthcare practitioner. A certified chaperone is also medicolegally recommended for all Independent Medical Examination (IME) assessments, ensuring that forensic medicolegal opinions are upheld. Anyone with appropriate training can become a certified chaperone.
Our medical workshops are created by neurosurgeon Dr. Vini Khurana, alongside two certified and experienced medical chaperones, Ms. Lauren Williams and Ms. Cathy Zhou. Certification is provided by Dr. Khurana at CNS Medicolegal (est. 2021), a partner company of CNS Neurosurgery (est. 2014). CNS Medicolegal's first chaperone workshop completion certificates were issued on 13 May 2026.
Medical secretaries, medical staff, medical students, nursing staff and physician assistants. Surgical assistants. Practice managers and receptionists. Anyone interested in qualified chaperoning.
The role of a chaperone is vital in various medical contexts, especially during Independent Medical Examinations (IME). Understanding when a chaperone can be utilised is essential for both practitioners and patients. It's important to distinguish between a "chaperone," an "observer," and a "support person" to ensure clarity in roles. An introduction to a patient or assessee should be handled delicately, as the interaction can significantly impact their comfort. Duties during chaperoning include ensuring patient privacy and maintaining professionalism, particularly during intimate examination chaperoning. Awareness of abuse and sexual misconduct is crucial in these situations. With the rise of tele-chaperoning, practitioners must adapt to new technologies while still adhering to best practices. Important factors to consider when chaperoning include the safety and comfort of the patient. If a chaperone is unavailable or refused, practitioners should have protocols in place to address these scenarios. The conduct of both the chaperone and the examiner is paramount to maintaining a respectful environment during medical workshops and examinations. Finally, knowing when to stop an examination is essential to uphold the dignity of the patient throughout the process. Our workshop addresses all of these aspects.
